Today, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) announced the unearthing of a sprawling Harappan Industrial Workshop at the Rakhigarhi site, dating back over 4,500 years.
This isn’t just a set of ruins; it is evidence of a highly sophisticated, standardized manufacturing system that mirrors modern industrial zones.
1. The “Industrial Zone” Layout
Unlike residential clusters, this new sector (Mound 7) was dedicated entirely to production.
- Standardized Furnaces: The ASI found a series of interconnected, high-temperature kilns and furnaces designed for mass-producing pottery and metal tools.
- Specialized Quarters: The layout suggests distinct zones for bead-making, copper-smelting, and shell-working, indicating a complex division of labor that is the hallmark of a developed economy.
2. Advanced Metallurgy: The Bronze Age “High-Tech”
The most stunning find is a set of crucibles with traces of advanced alloying.
- Arsenical Bronze: Preliminary tests show that the Harappans were intentionally alloying copper with arsenic to increase the hardness of their tools—a technique that requires precise temperature control.
- Precision Tools: Found at the site were micro-drills used for perforating carnelian beads, tools so fine they suggest a level of craftsmanship that rivals modern precision engineering.
3. Trade and the “Digital” Records of the Past
The workshop yielded a significant number of Harappan seals and weights.
