The wait for a “world-class” overnight train journey is finally over. Today, the Ministry of Railways officially flagged off the commercial trial runs for the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper fleet.
Unlike the existing chair-car versions, the Sleeper variant is designed for long-distance, overnight routes, aiming to replace the legendary Rajdhani Express as the gold standard of Indian rail travel. The first trial is currently underway on the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai corridor.
1. Design: Global Standards, Local Comfort
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just a train; it is a mobile hotel.
- Ergonomic Berths: Each berth features extra cushioning and a “ladder-less” design for the middle and upper berths to make it easier for senior citizens.
- Noise Insulation: The train uses advanced sound-dampening materials, ensuring the interior noise level is lower than a premium aircraft cabin, even at speeds of 160 km/h.
- Vacuum Toilets: Taking a cue from aviation, the train is equipped with aircraft-style vacuum toilets and touch-free sensor-based taps.

True to the Digital Life ethos, every berth is a personal tech hub.
- Interactive Displays: Every passenger has access to a foldable personal screen that allows them to track the train’s real-time speed, order gourmet meals, or stream movies via the on-board NavIC-integrated Wi-Fi.
- Inductive Charging: Say goodbye to tangled wires; side tables now feature wireless “Inductive Charging” pads for smartphones and tablets.
3. Safety First: Kavach 2.0
Safety remains the highest priority for the new fleet.
- Anti-Collision: The train is the first to be fully integrated with Kavach 2.0, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system that prevents collisions even if two trains are on the same track.
- Crash-Resistant Design: The coaches are built using high-grade austenitic stainless steel, designed to absorb impact and prevent telescoping in the unlikely event of an accident.
4. Enhancing the “National Pulse”
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to revolutionize inter-city connectivity for the working professional and the tourist alike.
- Time Efficiency: With a top operational speed of 160 km/h, the Delhi-Mumbai journey is expected to be cut by at least 2 hours, allowing travelers to finish a full day of work in one city and wake up fresh in the other.

5. What’s Next for 2026?
Following the Delhi-Mumbai trials, the Railways plan to roll out these trains on the Delhi-Howrah and Bengaluru-Chennai routes by mid-2026. A total of 50 Sleeper sets are currently being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
