India Joins US-Led “Pax Silica”: A New Era of Global Tech & Mineral Security

In a move described as “strategic and essential,” India officially signed the Pax Silica Declaration on February 20, 2026, during the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. By joining this elite US-led coalition, India has effectively secured its place in the “commanding heights” of the 21st-century global economy.

The agreement was signed by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and US Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg, in the presence of the new US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor.

What is Pax Silica?

The name combines “Pax” (Latin for peace) and “Silica” (the precursor to silicon chips). It is an economic security bloc designed to build “trusted” supply chains for the AI age. The coalition aims to ensure that the minerals, energy, and hardware required for AI are not controlled by hostile actors.

Why India’s Entry is a Game-Changer

India’s inclusion marks a significant turn in bilateral relations following a period of trade friction. Here’s why this matters for the Indian tech ecosystem:

  • Breaking China’s Monopoly: India currently relies on China for about 93% of its rare earth imports. Pax Silica provides a framework to diversify these sources.
  • Access to Advanced Tech: The partnership will facilitate deeper collaboration on 2-nanometer chip design and fabrication technology.
  • Investment Surge: The signing coincided with commitments from US tech giants to invest billions into Indian AI infrastructure.
  • “India-US AI Opportunity Partnership”: Alongside the declaration, both nations signed a bilateral addendum specifically focused on empowering Indian AI startups and developers.

A Message of Strength

US Ambassador Sergio Gor emphasized that the partnership isn’t just about trade—it’s about sovereignty. “We choose freedom, we choose partnership, we choose strength,” Gor stated. “And today, with India’s entry into Pax Silica, we choose to win.”

Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this spirit of collaboration will benefit the millions of Indian engineers who will now have “unfettered access” to the world’s best design tools and research ecosystems.
